What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the traditional medicine system of India, often considered the oldest medicine system in the world. It is designed to help us stay healthy and vibrant and treats disease holistically. Ayurveda means science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge).

Ayurveda is a preventative science. It focuses on mind-body healing and is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a balance between body, mind and spirit. It is the only medicinal system that looks at an individual in this way.

To keep or achieve that balance, it is important that we (re-)learn how to eat the foods, live the kind of lifestyle and do the type of movement that best suits our unique mind-body-type (dosha). The beautiful thing about the Ayurvedic system is that it is sophisticated, yet very practical and easy to integrate into our every day lives.

Unique mind-body-types (doshas)

Ayurveda approaches each person as an individual by evaluating that person’s specific mind-body-type (dosha). Your mind-body-type are your physical, mental and emotional characteristics and tendencies. Ayurveda is not a one-size-fits-all system and acknowledges that we are all unique, which is why its approach is so effective.

In Ayurveda, there are three different doshas. The doshas are combinations of the five main elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth.

The doshas are called:

  • Vata (air and ether)
  • Pitta (fire and water)
  • Kapha (earth and water)

We all have a combination of these doshas (and thus all five elements) within us, but usually one or two doshas are dominant. The doshas show up in different ways in the mind and body. For example, some people have a thin, light frame and have a hard time putting on weight (Vata), whereas others have a strong build and a slow metabolism (Kapha); some people are calm and grounded (Kapha), whereas others have a more fiery personality (Pitta); etc.
